Is it normal for a car battery to die without warning?

I have a 2003 Taurus. I went to a garage sale today and when I got back in the car the battery was dead. Would not make any noise at all when I turned the key. Tried jumping it but could not get it to start. Took battery to auto parts store, their machine said it was bad so I bought a new one. Car started fine with new battery. Is it most likely the battery, or do you think it might be something else?Is it normal for a car battery to die without warning?
batteries die like that all the time, its normal,id rather one went like that as start going out slowly,at least this way you know what it was that happened to it,but yes it happens all the time i own a shop and i see this at least two times a week if not more, age and constant use causes most batteries to go bad,you should be ok on the new battery for a while good luck with it.
your welcome.

Is it normal for a car battery to die without warning?
When a cell goes bad in a car battery it's the end. It can happen suddenly like a light bulb burning out. The average life of a car battery (despite any guaranty's or warranties) is about 3 - 4 years.
It could be the battery, but the Taurus is famous for blowing fuses in the main power buss.Is it normal for a car battery to die without warning?
maybe....

but after u change the battery..please ask workshop guy to check your alternator....maybe problem come from alternator..
It was probably the battery. The same thing happened to me, and it was the battery. After a certain point, the battery won't even make the motor try to turn over. No lights come on. Nothing happens. Sometimes this does happen without warning (hard to start, etc).
Check the starter connections at the starter for looseness. I have seen many Taurus' have loose starter connections. It is possible for a battery to be fine one minute and have an internal short the next, but it is more likely that the starter itself is starting to fail.
Yes batteries can just go bad that quickly. Sounds like one of the cells went bad.
It happened to me once. Why I'm not sure, but I had the car checked and indeed it was the battery
Yes. The new "maintenance free" batteries tend to die without warning. They work great until they are dead. I think I liked to ones better that would give you a little warning, even though you did have to check the water level occasionally.
Could be the alternator. When you turn your car off make sure you turn everything off (example: Lights)
Batteries have a definite life span, and when they go, the do it pretty quickly.
Yes . Sometimes they will not take a jump or hold a charge. I generally replace battery's every 3 years. Battery life is effected by what part of the country you live in . Extreme weather will shorten the life in any battery . Cold Winter , Hot Summer , Etc........
Yep, battery. Else the alternator isn't properly charging the battery. If your new battery runs down quickly, you'll know it's the alternator.
You should get a battery pack and keep that around. They have very portable ones that you can keep in the trunk and jump your car through your cigarette lighter if you ever have this problem.. They have stuff like this at Target for $20.

Chances are your battery was getting worn out, but if you had something like this, you'd have more time to figure out if it was actually the battery or another electrical problem or if something just got wet / shorted out.

P.S. if you unhook your battery and leave it alone for a day, sometimes it will 'repair' itself. This has happened to me several times. Be careful when doing this though, you'll need insulating gloves, goggles are a good idea, and you definately do not want to be grounded.
Yep, very common for cells to go bad suddenly.
it might of been on its last days it still drans when not in use :)
Yes it is possible. I had my car battery replaced last year after a five year period. Most car batteries have 4-5 years of living. That what they told me at the garage.

  • How long does it take to charge a car battery?

I havent used my car for a couple months and the batterys gone dead so i borrowed my friends car battery charger and let it charge overnight and its still not charged? How long does it take to charge a car battery?
It's probably one of those cheap **** chargers. You might be better off attempting to get a jumpstart and let it run for a while.
Mad Jack is right about taking longer for a badly discharged battery. Also most portable "Home type" chargers are only trickle chargers and take forever on a badly discharged battery. If it doesn't come up in a bit longer try taking it somewhere where they have a full service charger that can do first a high level charge then a taper charge to finish up. Further, if the battery was connected to the system the entire time it may be so far discharged that it's no longer serviceable and needs to be replaced. If you know you aren't going to drive for several months it's best to remove the negative lead from the battery. How long does it take to charge a car battery?
The battery should be fully charged after 8 hours. The battery could be defective. I would suggest that you make sure that the battery charger is properly connected and that it is making a good connection.

The simplest method for checking your connection is to use the headlights.

First, turn on the headlights before you connect the battery charger. They should be very dim or not working at all if the battery is completely dead.

Next connect the battery charger and turn it on. (It will probably spark right when you connect it, that is normal, however, if it continues to spark or starts smoking, unplug the battery charger from the wall outlet)

If the headlights come on or get brighter when the charger comes on, you know that you have a good connection. If this is the case, turn the headlights back off and let the battery charge for a few hours.

If the lights do not get brighter, then you have another problem, such as a defective charger, bad connection, or bad battery. Be sure your battery cables are snugly connected to the battery and free of corrosion, as the battery cable connection is probably the most common cause of cranking issues.

Sorry I wrote you a book, but hopefully it will help.
Typical car battery holds 70 amp-hours, and typical small lunchbox sized charger is 10 amps, so 7 hours. A bit longer due to inefficiency. Check your charger and do the math. If you have one of those tiny cigarette pack sized 1 amp trickle chargers, might be longer, you guessed it, 70 hours :)

You don't need to fully charge the battery to start the car. As long as it starts, once it's started it will recharge the battery.

How old is the battery? Lead-acid car batteries tend to wear out after about 5 years give or take. If it's older, it may just be shot and need replacing.

Make sure you're charging it properly, i.e. the ammeter shows a strong charge at first and then tapers off.

Make sure the area you're doing this is well ventilated. Batteries put out hydrogen gas when charging, especially if the battery is worn out. If you think that gas might have accumulated, don't do anything to make a spark, i.e. don't unhook the charger. Ventilate the room to outside. How long does it take to charge a car battery?
Can you pop off the maintenance caps? Can you see the fluid level inside? If low, top up with distilled water. If you trickle charged it for a long period, and it's still no good, have it professionally load tested. Conventional car batteries dislike being fully discharged. Your battery may be toast.
If the battery has completely failed, it may not take a charge.

The amount of time it takes to charge an automotive battery depends on how discharged the battery is, the amperage rating of the battery, and the charging rate of the battery charger you are using.

Many of the new fully automatic electronic battery chargers will not charge a battery if it is bad. If the battery is too dead or fails initial tests this type of battery charger will switch to desulfation mode. In this mode it will send high frequency electronic pulses through the battery plates to remove sulfur deposits. Then it will attempt to charge the battery. If the charger still detects problems with the battery it will not charge the battery and a fail light will illuminate on the battery charger. If the battery is good it will take about 8 to 10 hours to fully charge the battery and this type of automatic battery charger will stop charging so the battery is not over charged.

If you use a older style manual or automatic battery charger it will still take some time to charge a battery. As a very general amount a time it will take about 8 to 10 hours to fully charge a car battery with a 10 amp automotive battery charger.
Yes, take it off and try it. You've got nothing to loose....

Without knowing how many amps you are using here

it's hard to say how long. Even a slow 2 amp charger should

have brought it back enough to start the car.

    Go for it...
Depends on how many amps the charger puts out. 2amp charger, may take well over a day. 10amp should charge overnight.
It should take a few hours for it to get a good charge.

What kind of car battery does a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse use?

I need to buy a new car battery and I have no idea how to choose one. Cheap is preferable. It's a GS, not GT. Is there a specific size? What kind of car battery does a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse use?
Look at the battery. If your buying one, you have to go to the store, an auto parts store will usually tell you what you need and even test it and replace/install it if necessary. FOR FREE! (install %26amp; check it for free, you still have to buy it)
Yes if you tell the nice man behind the counter make engine size. he will tell you which batt you req personly cheap is not the best to go for,if you can aheavy duty is best and will work out cheaper in the end. What kind of car battery does a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse use?
Yes, there will be a specific size group for the battery. Wherever you buy it (unless you buy a used one from somebody) will have a chart with the correct size group for your car.

If a cold car battery is hard to start. Can I use a blow dryer or heater to warm it up some?

Living in a cold climate, my car is hard to start in the winter. Can I use a hair dryer or small heater to heat the battery up and would that help start a cold engine? If a cold car battery is hard to start. Can I use a blow dryer or heater to warm it up some?
Yes you can. But using a hair dryer would take a very long time due to the materials and density of a battery. You can buy an electric battery blanket. Just plug it in like a block heater at night, and it keeps the battery warm. Doesn't draw that much electricity either. If a cold car battery is hard to start. Can I use a blow dryer or heater to warm it up some?
yes it will actually help it to start better ,but your going to get really cold in the process, you can put the battery in a battery box and insulate it really well and that will also help it,but yes i have used a hair drier before,it does work.good luckIf a cold car battery is hard to start. Can I use a blow dryer or heater to warm it up some?
You could but I would NOT recommend it.

If the Hairdryer should spark, you'll end up BLOWING up the battery due to the explosive gases batteries give off. Very Dangerous to try.

The battery blanket might work, or you might consider a dipstick crankcase warmer to keep the engine oil thin and the engine will turn easier.

Is it safe to leave a car battery on a 10 amp charger after it has reached its maximum capacity?

I bought a new battery for a car, and then I moved to another country for a year. Now I'm back and I'm trying to see if the battery is salvageable. I'm reading its going to take many more hours than normal dead battery circumstances to put a descent charge on it. I'm wondering if I can just forget about it for a day and not worry about causing a fire in the garage. I have a 10 amp charger. Is it safe to leave a car battery on a 10 amp charger after it has reached its maximum capacity?
No, it's not safe at all, overcharging a lead acid battery presents all kind of dangers, once the battery has reached maximum capacity a trickle charger should be used, less then 1amp.Is it safe to leave a car battery on a 10 amp charger after it has reached its maximum capacity?
it will be safe. make sure however, that the area is well ventilated. Is it safe to leave a car battery on a 10 amp charger after it has reached its maximum capacity?
    2 amp would be better.

How much nickel is mined for one hybrid car battery?

I am curious to know how much nickel is mined for the average hybrid car battery? I've heard hybrids toted as the solution, but nickel is a finite resource which must be mined. As I understand it the batteries are extremely heavy composed of mostly nickel. How much nickel is mined for one hybrid car battery?
I don't know the answer to your question. However, gasoline is also a finite resource which must be extracted from the Earth, and hybrids save on gasoline. Additionally, in a few years hybrids will replace nickel-metal hydride batteries with lithium-ion technology. And finally, hybrid batteries are fully recycleable:

"Toyota has a comprehensive battery recycling program in place and has been recycling nickel-metal hydride batteries since the RAV4 Electric Vehicle was introduced in 1998. Every part of the battery, from the precious metals to the plastic, plates, steel case and the wiring, is recycled. To ensure that batteries come back to Toyota, each battery has a phone number on it to call for recycling information and dealers are paid a $200 "bounty" for each battery."

  • How to charge a car battery OUT of the car?

OK...how do I charge a car battery if it is outside of the car? This is the type of batter that does not have the 'posts' coming out of it (you have to screw in the connectors in the car). Since most car chargers/trickle chargers come with clamps only...how can I do this? I live in an apartment complex so an extension cord going down the stairs will be dangerous and not allowed. Thanks! How to charge a car battery OUT of the car?
Well, you can get two bolts that thread into the side posts of the battery and connect the charger jumpers to the bolts. It will make a connection that way and charge.
you'll have to connect with a special charging unit to an a/c wall outlet, no two ways about. I doubt your landlord is going to let you tap into the building's supply, so you can carry it upstairs and do it inside your apt.How to charge a car battery OUT of the car?
I allways used a bolt but you still get most clamps to grab good enough for a low amp charge.
take it to auto zone or any car parts store and they should be able to charge the battery for you FOR FREE!!! Find 2 bolts that can fit in the side post.and hook clamps to it.How to charge a car battery OUT of the car?
It' not normally the best way, but you can take battery into your apartment. Find some bolts that will screw into the battery terminals that match the threads (or the bolts from the battery cables). Use a trickle charger and clamp onto the bolts and leave it overnight. I suggest that you keep the battery away from any flame or fire souce (furnace). And use gloves to carry it and make sure you have good footing so as to not drop it. Make sure you set the battery on the floor and there is a dropcloth or something to protect the floor (in case of leakage- which there is none usually).
Find the proper size of bolt that screws into the battery and and clamp the charger to the bolts. If you're inside, be sure to have plenty of ventilation.
You obviously have a G.M. product. Just get a couple of bolts to screw into the posts and clamp on them. Or twist and pry the bolts you have out of the plastic ends of the cables. Ain't that hard
You can try using bolt and nuts to screw in as posts.

What are the precautions to change a car battery?

    Dear all,

First of all, how long does a car battery last? Is it climate dependent?

Next, I plan to change the battery myself and I want to know if there's any precaution e.g. sequential removal/connecting of battery terminals (like the ones we read when jump starting a dead battery)? What tools do I need? Will a small wrench do?What are the precautions to change a car battery?
A regular car battery usually lasts 3-4 years. It's pretty simple to switch out for most vehicles. I would in the very least have a 3/4 ratchet and socket set and a couple of flat head and phillips head screwdrivers.

Beyond however it's mounted in the vehicle there are two posts. Just disconnect the negative and the positive and install the new battery.

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION THAT YOU DO NOT TOUCH ONE OF YOUR TOOLS OR ANYTHING METAL TO BOTH THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TERMINAL ON YOUR BATTERY.
    Dear Julian C,

Car batteries do not have a specific lifespan, but most last from 2 - 5 years. Yes, climate plays a part in their durability. Extreme heat and cold will shorten their life.

Changing a battery is easy. Make sure to not wear metal objects like watches, rings, etc, to avoid any possible short circuit or electric shock. Remove the negative terminal first with a proper sized wrench (10mm is a good start). Consider wearing gloves for protection from battery acid spills. Inspect each battery cable for splitting cases or other damage and replace if needed. Make sure the new battery is secure in the car and not sitting loose, as any jostling or bumping can damage it. Spray on some battery terminal protectant, or coat the terminal in petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion from forming.

That's it. Keep the battery warranty handy in case you need to submit a claim.

Regards. What are the precautions to change a car battery?
If your car is 1996 or newer, the first thing you'll need is a "setting saver" so that you don't need to have the radio security code.

    1. Get some latex gloves and eye protection.

    2. Install setting saver.

    3. remove NEGATIVE terminal first. Normally black, but you should be able to follow it to the engine block.

    4. remove POSITIVE, normally red. A big cable should go to the starter.

    5. take the old battery out. watch your fingers.

    6. put new battery in car, fasten the battery hold-down to keep the battery from tipping over and causing a fire.

    7. use wire brush to clean terminals and battery posts.

    8. Install POSITIVE first, tighten terminal so you can't wiggle it.

    9. Install NEGATIVE last, tighten also.

    10. Put some vaseline or grease on the terminals to reduce corrosion.

    11. remove setting saver. Start car.

NOTE: DO NOT ALLOW TOOLS TO TOUCH POSITIVE TERMINAL TO THE CAR, YOU WILL CREATE SPARKS AND COULD CAUSE A FIRE. Eye protection is smart, because under some circumstances, sparks could cause the hydrogen gas generated by a battery to explode.
A couple weeks of real cold weather annually (30-40 below @ night) usually tells you that a good battery will be reliable about 4 years.

Tools may vary. Match tool to the fastener. Always look away before the 2nd final connection to avoid potential explosion getting in your face. What are the precautions to change a car battery?
Make sure when you are installing it, you put the hot (red) wire in place before the ground (Black). The opposite applies to removing a battery (black gets disconnected first). Also, when installing or uninstalling, keep track of where the ground wire is, you don't want it to make contact with the frame and arc unintentionally.

You might need a ratchet with a drive adapter to remove the block holding the battery in place.
If you are not sure of your battery condition go to auto supply and they will test it free.

Pay attention---remove NEGATIVE battery terminal FIRST.

Quite often a weak battery condition can be caused by dirty battery terminals.

The life of a battery can depend on many conditions including climate.

Extreme temperature ( hot or cold ) reduce the life of a battery.

A car battery can last a very long time, but in most situations, 3 to 6 years is what you'll get.

I would recommend stopping at a Batteries Plus store if you have one near you ( http://www.batteriesplus.com )

They can either replace the battery for you or explain to you how to do it properly. They'll also take your old battery for recycling on the stop. It would be a great way to learn how to do that from a professional.... for free.
climate has alot to do with how long a battier willl last along with the kind you by the cheaper the shourter so get one that is atlest midrage for a longer life exp and make sure your battier is clamped down for the bouncing may be fun with your girl frend is deth for your battier when you change dis coneted the neg first then the possative when reconeting revirs proses and you are done

Best to get the hood latch fixed, so you can check all under hood, but for emergency type fix if you have a spot light or a plug in that will fit the cig lighter you can use a 1 amp charger through it, but you have to wire it correct so the plus side is the center of plug and the minus wire is the side contact if you know what your doing this will work for you over night, the hood cable that broke can be opened by any mechanic, If you decide to charge your batt through the cigg lighter, make sure its low amp charger as to high amp can cause a wire to get hot and catch the car on fire, they do make 1 amp charger with cigg lighter plug on the end if you wish to buy one, P.S. sometimes a batt if its newer or in good shape will build up some during the night but not enough to start the car acid type batt will recover some on there own. No.

the vehicle needs to be running for the alternator to charge it up. This would be like asking "my cell phone batter died, if I let it sit all night will it charge itself up?"

Get a pair of pliers and grab where the hood latch release was (I am assuming under the dash) and pull. Keep a pair of pliers in the car.

I'm more concerned about the condition of the engine . . . if you haven't been opening the hood how have you been checking (or changing) the oil or any of the other fluids.

If the lights were left on for any length of time - it may take quite a while to jump start it.Will car battery work after sitting overnight?
no, I work as a technician at a local toyota dealer, the battery may build over time but only if the cables are unhooked even then the battery wont charge enough. u need to manualy open the hood and then charge it if u let me know what kind of car shes has i may be able to help u do it.
    Not likely.

You need to get the hood release fixed anyways otherwise you won't be able to do essential things like oil changes.

Nope. You're going to have to get creative and pop the hood somehow. Can you see the wires that attach to the release handle? I'm no techie about autos, I'm just curious. What's the difference if the car is on/off? If you could drive the whole night with headlights on, how come it doesn't drain the battery? Why does the car battery drain when you leave the headlights on?
    Yes it does.

    ==

The reason is that your car has a charger (alternator) that recharges or powers all electrical system if the engine is running. If the engine is not running then your battery is supplying all the electrical power.

If you don't believe me, just ask anybody who ever left their lights on.

    ===

Ignore all the people below who's making fun of your question. Everybody's knowledge starts somewhere. There was time when even they didn't know what they know now.

There are no bad students as long as the student is interested in learning. There are plenty of bad teachers who thinks they are too smart for their students.
the reason you can drive all night with the lights on is because as the car is on the alternator is charging the battery. no alternator charging the battery, no lights on all night. same with any other light in your car. watch that pesky truck light and glove box light. those will drain the battery too. it draws poer from it. just like a AA bettery in your remote. eventually it will use all the charge that bettery has. hope that helps! good luck! Why does the car battery drain when you leave the headlights on?
win the motor is runing the car makes power for the lights to run off av but win the motor is off the car can't make power for the lights so the battery goes died be caz the battery holds power
The electrical system in a car is powered by the alternator when the car is running. It also keeps the battery fully charged. The battery is designed to hold a specific charge in order to start the car and can power the electrical system (lights, radio, etc) for a relatively short period. If the headlights (major power consumer) are left on while the car is off and it is an older model which doesn't compensate by turning the lights off automatically then eventually, just like a flashlight, the battery will run dead. Why does the car battery drain when you leave the headlights on?
haha wow dont have to be a genius for this one man
Why does my bed get cold ? Its got a blanket!
When your car is running the alternator which is generally belt driven is charging the battery in order to keep a constant flow of electricity to the vehicle. When your is not running the alternator cannot recharge the battery hence draining the battery of all energy.
.... So he can understand........lol something with less big words.

When your car is ON its using gas to run things. and those things keep your battery juiced up. But if your car is OFF then its not using any gas so there is nothing to keep your battery juiced up so it dies.
When the car is turned on there is a generator which comes to life. The head light is then powered by the generator. There is no battery power loss.

With the car turned off, only power source is battery, which keeps depleting when headlights are on.

It is usually the alternator when that happens.
Could be a bad alternator. What is the most common cause of a car battery discharge warning light?
sounds like your altenator. Do NOT drive the car because you will get stuck!
Most likely either your alternator is dying or a coil is going berzerk. That's what happened alot for me, and then without any kind of warning, my car died and there was no way to get it started again. My best bet for you is have your alternator checked right away. Any good mechanic with an Ohlmeter can test it for you.
Alternator going bad. If it is 90 degrees where you live your battery may be failing.
Bad ground. have you made sure you have a good connection or that the cable is not corroded

The blower motor does not take 20 amps to run it only takes a few amps tops unless it has something wrong with it.

Now that being said the air conditioner will not work without the car running, the blower will blow air but it will not be cold, the compressor has to be turning to give you cold air, and to have it turning the engine has to be running.

The fan will work for several hours if the battery is good but I wouldn't chance it what if the battery is a little weak and the car ends up dead in traffic not good my friend. How long would a car battery last if you run the air conditioner?
the blower motor takes about 20 amps to run. If you can find the amp/hour rating for your battery, you can do the math. 1 amp/hour means the battery can put out 1 amp for 1 hour. How long would a car battery last if you run the air conditioner?
the AC won't cool without the car running so it serves no porpoise to run the AC

How can you tell if your car battery is a negative or positive grounded post system?

I am trying to charge a battery in my car with an electrical charger and want to make sure I am hooking it up right. ThanksHow can you tell if your car battery is a negative or positive grounded post system?
Most cars (at least in the US) have the negative side grounded. You can check by following the negative cable and see what it attaches to. Most likely it will bolt to the frame or body of the car, and somewhere on the engine or transmission.
It really doesn't matter. Hook the red wire to the terminal marked "+" and the black one to the terminal marked "-".How can you tell if your car battery is a negative or positive grounded post system?
the positive will go to the starter and the negative goes to ground, either to the engine block or the frame the positive is most time red but not always. there hasn't been a positive ground American car in years and only some British imports are still backwards. you want to put the positive on first and take it off last. also put the ground on the engine block on the dead vehicle not on the battery. the battery is highly flammable and will go BOOM if you get a big spark
look at the battery...there is a + on one side and a - on the other side...black goes to - red goes to +......and don't worry if you hook it up backwards you will know it pretty fast. How can you tell if your car battery is a negative or positive grounded post system?
All auto batteries are the same as far as terminal polarity goes. The difference in Pos ground and neg. ground is the vehicle. Normally the ground or negative terminal is connected to the chassis. Just hook up your charger Positive (red, or +) clamp to the positive (red or +) terminal or post first. Then hook up the negative (black or -) clamp to the negative (black or -) terminal or post.
It does not matter in regards to the way the charger is hooked up. Always pos to pos and neg to neg.
Most are neg ground but it doesn't matter. Always hook the black bat charger wire to - and red wire to +

  • What would cause a car battery to corrode quickly?

The positive cables attached to my car battery corrode so fast I have to clean them at least once a month. Does this mean the battery is bad? What would cause a car battery to corrode quickly?
first, IMPORTANT; wear eye protection around that battery of yours!! do not put your face over it when you are working on it. that bent post makes me worry for you. i have seen a battery explode! not trying to scare you, just warn you to be very careful when working on those terminals. you could short the battery out causing it to explode if the terminal snaps off. i think a crack in the case by the post is causing the corrosion. the acid is very corrosive so when you change the battery out wash down the tray with baking soda to neutralize the acid. then rinse with water to clean up the residue. be careful and good luck
Alternator malfunction? What would cause a car battery to corrode quickly?
Alternator malfunction. Ha Ha Ha that's a funny guess.
No. it means its dirty, clean it with a battery cleaning kit, then use battery grease to prevent corrosion and last

    MOST IMPORTANT

keep your cable ends as tight as possible so it prevents vibration or movement.

A loose cable will corrode faster. What would cause a car battery to corrode quickly?
I would check the alternator first, although I do not think that that would help much. Take a volt meter and you should see approximately 14V at the battery when the car is on.

Check and make sure that the cable is tightly connected to the post. Use a light sandpaper to clean the post and the inside of the connector. Get some no-ox and put a light film around the battery post. You do not want to much as this stuff is non conductive. I usually apply with my finger and lightly wipe it off with a paper towel. There should be enough residue left on the post and then connect your cable.

No-ox is very cheap and can be found at most electrical supply stores, home depot, etc.
It needs to be cleaned properly, tightened properly and greased with a spray type grease not WD40. IT HAS NOTHING to do with the alternator, by the way.
First of all the connections need to be tight. After making sure they are tight you can cover the posts with a battery post spray on product that keeps out moisture which is the major cause of battery corrosion. You can also cover the battery posts with Vaseline or a light grease to accomplish the same thing however it's not as effective as the spray sealer. Make sure you don't have the battery (electrolyte) fluid level to full. No higher than the inside ring inside the the battery below the cap. If it's to high than this is where the moisture is coming from because as you drive you battery charges making the fluid warm which expands it and causes it to leak. Good luck
The post where the cable attaches may be broke loose from battery.
any battery that is not maintance free will leak acid and cause corrosion. they are cheap made and low price which lure customers in. if you want to cut down corrosion, the only battery that will do this a/c delco. BMW,LEXUS,TOYOTA,GM,HONDA start using a/c Delco on their vehicles to make customers happy

Why is it important to connect negative terminal away from car battery when charging?

I have read on a website that when charging your car battery, whether inside or outside of the car, you should connect the negative (black) clip away from the battery by using a jumper cable when the battery is not connected to the car or by connecting the negative clip to a piece of solid steel connected to the frame if the battery is indeed connected to the car.

Why is this? Why is it important to connect negative terminal away from car battery when charging?
The idea is that the last connection you make should be away from the battery because that's the one that will spark, and there could possibly be some hydrogen gas near the battery that could cause an explosion.

The main thing that the "experts" get wrong when you're jump starting is where to connect it. You shouldn't connect it to the frame or chassis, because you'd be pulling several hundred amps of starting current through the engine/chassis ground connection, which isn't made to handle it. You should always make that last connection to the engine block. It doesn't matter much when just charging.
Batteries give off hydrogen gas which is explosive. A spark, when connecting can set it off. That's why you should not work on a battery in an enclosed area. So long as it's in an open, well ventilated area it's not a real problem. Typically, a good battery shop would have a vent hood above the area where they service batteries. Fumes can build up under the car's hood so that's why they advise to connect the ground to the frame at a point away from the battery. The likely hood of an explosion is small but, if it occurs the explosion can smother you with flames and acid.

ADDED: Connecting to the engine block is not essential and still leaves the possibility of a spark setting off an explosion from gases that have gathered under the hood. Most batteries are grounded to the frame and the engine block has a separate ground connection to the frame. The engine ground wire is generally of small gauge and not meant to carry that much current. Connecting to the frame is much better. Why is it important to connect negative terminal away from car battery when charging?
While a battery is charging, a by-product of the electro-chemical process is hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas is very explosive. So when connecting a jumper cable to a car battery, you first connect your positive wire to the positive battery post. Then connect the negative to anywhere on the car, since the car itself is negative ground. this method will help to avoid an unintended spark too close to the battery that may occur when you connect the second lead and possibly avoid an explosion. A spark too close to the battery may ignite residual hydrogen gas which may be present and ....Ka-boom!
To avoid sparks near the battery. Sulfuric Acid Gas is explosive. Although rare on

average, batteries have exploded because of the gas being ignited by a spark.

Charging batteries or Hot Batteries usually have a higher concentration of this gas. So

it's important to follow safety procedures to avoid such accidental combustion.

Hope this helpsWhy is it important to connect negative terminal away from car battery when charging?
The gases produced in a car battery are highly flammable. It's a safety precaution because there is usually a spark when the cables are connected.

If ignited, the battery may explode and could blow your head clean off. Do you feel lucky? ;-)
To avoid the sparks, carbonic acid is flammable and explosive.

Hook up the pos+ to the batt terminal.

the spark will fly when the circuit is complete so you move away from the batt to a grounded place not on the batt.

Does the car battery charge up with the engine running if the car is sitting still?

I thought the car had to be going at highway speeds to charge the battery. A friend of mine is trying to tell me that the battery will charge if you just start the engine and sit still.

Thanks.Does the car battery charge up with the engine running if the car is sitting still?
as long as the engine is driving the alternator, the battery should be charging. trans gear has absolutely nothing to do with it. the charge light is still off at a stop light right?
if the battery is low it will take a charge now the answer your both kinda right if the battery is good when the car is running the alternator actually besides battery charging it is running ALL the accessories Stereo power whatever you have optioned or the car came with ok so along with a nifty lil gadget the voltage regulator depending on your rpm the volt reg keeps a flow of current to the battery depending on the rpm now of course the faster it goes in theory the alt will increase as rpm does but the volt reg is controlling the flow so through out the driving range the volt reg keeps consistent flow of current flowing regardless of rpm the regulator does this job so if your battery is in good shape at idle it is really not "charging but being maintained by the alternator now if your battery is old and failing then yes the alternator will work harder to maintain that current until it cant keep up the demand and the battery is replaced also when the battery is weak like that it also strains the alternator sometimes ruining it because of the extra demand placed on it or causing v regulator failureDoes the car battery charge up with the engine running if the car is sitting still?
Motion of the car is irrelevant. RPM of the engine is relevant however the only proper way to charge a flat battery is with a charger meant for the purpose.
No, the battery charges as long as the engine moves, not the car, so while your sitting still, as long as the engine is running the car will charge.Does the car battery charge up with the engine running if the car is sitting still?
As soon as you start your car the battery will start charging, or should if everythings working correctly

How can I jump start my car battery without asking someone for a jump?

My car won't start. Can I jump start it with like a 9v battery or something? Help Please!! Thanks! How can I jump start my car battery without asking someone for a jump?
You have to get a trickle charger that has a jump start function. That or you get another fully charged car battery and jump it that way.
Go to the auto parts store, or even Walmart...they sell emergency jump start power packs, with instructions. How can I jump start my car battery without asking someone for a jump?
You can only 'jump' a vehicle with another 12Volt car battery with heavy cables. The starter draws over 200 Amps.

Your next bet is to put a battery charger on it for a couple hours.
I bought a battery booster that has outlets, lights, air compressor and gauge all in one for $50 brand new at flea market. It has helped me out a lot. You can carry it with one hand. Try wiggling cables for now. Maybe it's just a bad or corroded connection. But with this cold weather, I think it's the battery doesn't have enough power. If you know someone who has a tripe A card, they can use it on your car. Just a few suggestions. How can I jump start my car battery without asking someone for a jump?
The onlyway you could do that would be to have one of those portable jump packs. They work great by the way.

    Best of Luck!
you,ll need a good battery charger or a good jump from someone a 9 volt battery wont do it,a good battery charger that has the booster built in to it will start it,good luck i hope this help,s.
I have seen a battery pack for sale at the stores that advertise jump start capability but do not know first hand if they do the job. You could carry this in your trunk...
i dont think a 9v battery is strong enough, but they have those jump starts at wal-marts.

What happens if I drive my car with no ground connection on the battery?

I just noticed that my car battery ground connection came undone and has not been connected for who knows how long, but I havent had any car trouble. What happens without a ground for the battery? What happens if I drive my car with no ground connection on the battery?
That ground is essential to complete the circuits. On some cars the heavy duty wire from the battery to ground is supplemented by some lighter gage wires for aftermarket accessories that could also do some grounding. That is the only way I could explain how your car works at all. However being thinner gage, those wires will burn or catch your car on fire from carrying a heavy current. I find it hard to believe that your starter motor runs without a heavy wire connection to ground.
Besides absolutely no power to anything, nothing. There must be some connection somewhere so please look again. What happens if I drive my car with no ground connection on the battery?
    Alot of damage.

See, even if the cable were disconnected, and touching the frame of the vehicle, it would not ground because there is no connection to the negative side of the battery.

But when you say drive, I assume you mean the vehicle is running and you have the negative cable disconnected. See, heres what happens, your alternator output is limited by the battery, the battery acts as sort of a capacitor, or a voltage limiter on your alternator. When you remove the negative battery cable, you remove the battery from the system, meaning the alternator will charge "wild". When this happens and the vehicle is driven, some vehicles are capable of putting out in excess of 150 volts at higher rpm's. And you have no protection against this, all your fuses are suited to protect against amperage, 150 volts will flow right through them.

Please, believe me when I say this can seriously damage your vehicle, NEVER remove the battery cable when the vehicle is running.

    ***ADDED***

Sure, go ahead listen to the people giving me thumbs down, see if I care. But before you dismiss what I say, do this: Go out and remove the cable from the back of your alternator, and then touch a voltmeter between that positive output post and a ground in your engine, and have someone run the engine up to 2,500 rpms, and just see what reading you get. But hey, what do I know..go ahead, ignore me, please, its people who do stupid stuff that keep me in business.
How did the car start with it undone?? Hey larmarin83 I'll give you a thumbs up because you are right, people have no idea do they??? I have the same problem alsoWhat happens if I drive my car with no ground connection on the battery?
if you mean the connection right at the battery...your alternator will not recharge the battery and depending on the car may destroy the alternator....

the car will not restart the nextime you try.

if you mean one of the smaller connections just reconnect it and you will be happily on your way...
um it needs a ground to work. which means its geting a ground off something else. take a look. whats gonna end up happening is the place its getting ground from is gonna heat up to much and fry or get a bad connection and not charge the battery or leave you stranded. its not that much of a problem to fix and youll be glad in the long run. cause its not gonna leave you.
If there is no ground the car wont' start....

It have to be connect somewhere or touch somewhere to the battery...

Every system need a ground loops.

the better the grounding to ur car the better ur car will perform...

tight the ground back..... use thick wire.

  • What does the car battery run on when the car is off?

I know that there are 3 times the car radio will work: when the car is running, when the battery is engaged, and the setting when you turn the key backwards one space. When it is in that last position, what exactly is the radio running on? My dad has always told me that it wasn't the battery, but never told me what it was. What does the car battery run on when the car is off?
Your dad is wrong. When the key is in the run position ALL the car's electronics are connected to the battery. When the key is turned backwards one space (Called Auxillary or AUX) only the radio and a few other electronic circuits are connected to the battery.
    runs anything

the ONLY time the car battery is used is its used to START the car and run accessories in the car ONLY when the car is off.. the alternator is what runs everything when the car is running. What does the car battery run on when the car is off?
i agree with mustange. if you put it on the ON position (turn the key forward) it pretty much turns on everything (electronically) on if you turn it backward which is the ACC than it doesn't turn on everything. the radio still gets the power from the battery but not all the other devices will turn on.
Your dad needs a lesson is electricity.

    Here it is broken down:

The REAL power plant of the car is the alternator as it powers the car and charges the battery with the engine ON. The ONLY purpose of the battery is to start the car and run the accessories with the engine OFF.

A car battery is like any other battery, it ALWAYS supplies power if it's not dead. What does the car battery run on when the car is off?
I totaly agree with all these answers, jst like to add that if you hav the car on the ACC mode, with the radio going, for too long the battery itself will drain n eventually die if left for too long. to stop this, simply turn the engine on, if the batt hasnt died, evry so often and the alternator will charg up the battery again

Does a block heater prevent a car battery from being dead?

Is a block heater charging a car battery while it is heating a car engine? Or is it warming up a car battery as well as a car engine? Or does it do nothing to a car battery but an engine?

Can I start up a car with dead battery while I am using a block heater, if a block heater is also working for car battery?

I apologize I don't know anything about car mechanics lol.Does a block heater prevent a car battery from being dead?
NO. A block heater keeps the block warm. It has nothing to do with the battery.Does a block heater prevent a car battery from being dead?
A block heater does just that, keeps the engine warm while it's cold out. The battery is a completely separate deal, if your battery is dead from the cold, it's time to replace it unless it's less than a year old. Now they do sell battery blankets that wrap around the battery to warm it up but if your battery is already dead, it's not gonna do you any good to get that. Your best bet is to put your battery on a trickle charger to charge it back to full charge and see if it starts your car, or just jump it off from another vehicle and then take it to a local auto parts store and have it tested. Most likely plan on spending some dough for a new battery tho. They don't last as long as the car does unfortunately. Hope this helps.Does a block heater prevent a car battery from being dead?
A block heater does nothing for the battery except as side issue. A warm engine will take less effort to start, and therefore puts less strain on the battery. It may make a poor battery perform satisfactorily.
ur right,,you do know nothing,,a block heater heats the block,,,either core plug,,heated dipstick or magnetic sump heater,,,does NOTHING for battery,,,

How long will a brand new car battery run on a completely dead alternator before I risk ruining it?

2000 Nissan Sentra brand new battery. Scheduled to replace alternator tomorrow. How much can I drive today/how many times can I start the car?How long will a brand new car battery run on a completely dead alternator before I risk ruining it?
?????????????? that's about it ,and not being sarcastic either!
It won't ruin the battery, you may need a jump. Your battery is only used for starting the car. Once started, the altenator runs ALL the electrical components i.e. radio, lights, etc. You can help reduce the drain on the battery by not turning on your lights during the day and keeping the radio off. If you need to go any where you should have a pair of jumper cables in the car incase you need a jump. Once you ALT is replaced it will recharge you battery. How long will a brand new car battery run on a completely dead alternator before I risk ruining it?
not very long, a day or two if you leave every thing off aside from the essentials. starting th car drains the battery the most. after that the battery really should not have much of a load. depending on traffic and how far you live from your destination, you could probably start the engine twice, but that is a gamble. my question is if you have a towing package with your car insurance.
You will not ruin the battery but it would go dead and you would have to get jumped off or get the battery charged before lraving the dealership, it would start but its anyine's guess as to how far it would go.

Good luckHow long will a brand new car battery run on a completely dead alternator before I risk ruining it?
Usually, if there's anything left in a battery at all it'll come back. But once it's totally dead, it's a tossup. After 2 or 3 starts, i'd figure you're pushing your luck

Will the car battery get charged when the car is set idle?

I do not drive the car very often. Usually once in a week and only for very short distances (i.e. 3 miles or so). Lately, I need a jump start to get the car started and the mechanics say I do not need battery change either. The prescription is to drive the car once in a while for 40 minutes or so. I also heard AAA people saying starting the car and set the car idling will do which means I do not even need to drive it around to get the battery charged. Is it true? Many thanks. Will the car battery get charged when the car is set idle?
A lot of alternators don't put out good voltage while the engine is idling. There are other reasons to take it for a good drive occasionally. The engine has to get hot enough to burn off condensation and for the coolant to circulate to to keep the system healthy. The exhaust has to get hot enough to burn off all the water that combustion leaves as a byproduct. Not many things are worse for a car than a lot of too short drives.
i agree with the above answer

Will the car battery get charged when the car is set idle?
Yes, a car will charge while at idle. If if does not then the alternator is shot and needs to be replaced.
I'm no mechanic but I believe that it's hard on the exhaust system if you just let the car idle or only drive for short periods of time. The battery will charge if the car is idling.
Yes, it will charge at an idle. But you really should drive it around a bit and get it up to speed. Lots of short trips are very hard on vehicles. A longer trip will take it up to proper operating temperatures and help to clear things out. (Condensation and the like)
i think as long as the car is running, the battery will be charging but i would still have the battery tested. you can go to any auto parts store and they will test it for you for free
yes it will charge, but not much, not fully. Youre better revving it up.
Car batteries are charged at a very low rate while idling; and even less if you are using lights, radio, heater etc. If it is cold where you are you need to buy either a trickle charger or a solar charger to keep your battery topped off. Discharged batteries can and do freeze, which will ruin it and if it bursts an expensive mess or explosion. You can try to chain your trips so that you can drive for longer periods of time. Short trips of less than 10 minutes total; are also hard on the engine and transmission because they don't get up to operating temperature long enough to burn off internal condensation. If your battery is in good condition, one 20 min trip every 3 to 4 weeks is usually enough to keep it charged.

How long will a car battery last when the car is not running?

I'm going to a festival and will be using a phone charger and hair straighteners that plug into the cigarette lighter.

I'm slightly concerned that I'll run the battery down. I'll be using the hair straighteners only for about 10 minutes a day and will charge the phone once.

cold weather is the killer of batteries/what you are doing will not hurt it at all/the outside heat will keep it okayHow long will a car battery last when the car is not running?
It depends on the type of battery you have in your vehicle. Many of the car batteries they sell on the market are questionable at best. I say that because none of them allow you to leave the car parked for not much more than a couple of weeks before it dies, and often it dies to the point that it will never recharge to its original strength. That's why, whenever I have to replace one of my batteries, I buy the deep cycle battery, one that will fit in the same pocket under the hood. Deep cycle batteries are those batteries they use for boats and tractors. These are vehicles that sit sometimes for months and can still be started, plus they can take all kinds of abuse because they are built tougher. How long will a car battery last when the car is not running?
That depends on the A/H rating of the battery in your car. Run the car at least once a day for half an hour to prevent the battery from getting to low.

  • How does the charging car battery works with engine on?

Is it enough to keep the engine running on regular bases or does the car have to move for the battery to charge? I am asking becouse mine could do with a charge top up but I have been on medication that makes me drowsy so there is no way I can drive to do this, I can seat n the car for a while tho if that is enough? How does the charging car battery works with engine on?
lol diesel, i assume you are describing an alternator, not a battery. As a battery is not belt driven nor has any moving parts lol.

the alternator produces a mechanically induced electrical current, a magnet spins inside a copper coil causing intermittent posotive and negative electricity. This is charging the battery as the crank turns. As someone already mentioned, it is a bit better to drive the car to prevent other things from seizing and to lift the revs a bit. But you shouldnt need to worry unless the car is being stored for over months tho
Under normal circumstances, you shouldn't have to charge your battery very often. Unless you have an alarm or something that is lit/running all the time, the battery in your car should hold a charge for many weeks. Starting you car and letting it idle for a little while (1/2 an hour every week) should charge it enough if it is sitting up. You should do this anyway for other mechanical maintainances also, especially turning on your AC and recirculating the lubricants involved with those systems. Normally, a fully charged battery should read about 12.5 volts. When your car is running the alternator should put out over 14 volts, which would charge your battery. Hope this helps! How does the charging car battery works with engine on?
I suggest you purchase a simple 'plug into the lighter socket charger'. It

will cost almost zero to use, and it will keep your battery up. That, of course depends on your parking situation. It would require 120 volt current. If you have a garage then that would be perfect. If not, then as many have stated, run the engine a few minutes every few days. Turn off all excessive loads such as anything plugged into the lighter socket.
You can charge the battery on idle. Maybe revving the engine up to 1500rpm for a few seconds occasionally. Make sure you leave the garage door open. We don't want you to be a carbon monoxide poisoning casualty. How does the charging car battery works with engine on?
    leave it alone.

    get a battery charger.

the day before you are planning to drive again, charge the battery.

sitting on tickover is not good for the engine, nor the environment
At engine tickover speeds the car battery will not get back what was taken to start it for at least an hour.

Better to get someone to drive it around for 20 minutes once a week thus jkeeping the other bits flowing nicely too
you dont need to drive.the alternator will recharge the battery for your next drive then when you drive that will also help.sit idle for 15 minutes

who is the person giving thumbs down for correct answers?grow up and move out of moms basement
the way the batter works is electricty run of copper wire and spinning. there is a metal piece with copper wire. it spin your belts when it spins your belt it charging your battery! so you dont have to move or anything to charge it.
You do not need to drive it anywhere for the battery to get a charge, but may want to leave it running for at least 10 minutes.
turn it on once a week or get a electric charger it will top up the battery as needed

ideally a run round the block is good

How safe is a car battery under the back seat?

I just recently found out the battery in my Olds Aurora is under the backseat instead of the hood. All I can think about is the battery exploding while my kids are back there. Can someone please tell me the chances of that happening? I really want to know because it scares me and I'm thinking about selling the car.How safe is a car battery under the back seat?
    Listen to Cowboy Bill.

My bug had the battery under the seat, and the one under the Aurora's seat is much safer.

It is a side post battery - the seat cannot short out the terminals.

    It has a protective cover.

Instead of selling the car, just make sure it has the proper battery installed correctly.

That means all plastic covers and BOTH vent tubes in place.

The vent tubes are a hassle, but that's the more important safety feature that you do want.
    Maybe 1 in 1,000,000,000.

Batteries have been under back seats for decades (the old VW Bug for example) and I have never heard of one 'exploding'. It isn't filled with gasoline or anything -- the hydrogen produced when charging is so minute that it will barely make a pop if you tossed a lighted match in it.

Don't worry. The battery is sheilded with a big plastic cover and vented to the outside so there is no chance of explosion. How safe is a car battery under the back seat?
YEAH, I also had an old "bug" with the batt under the seat, but it seems to me that there COULD be a problem with gasses entering the cabin if the voltage regulator goes bad and the batt is being over-charged.

Thank GOD that car was made into a dune buggy.
It's fine some BMW and Mercedes cars do that or in the trunk it's ok they are vented outside the body of the car it won't explode worst would be a leak of acid witch would leak out the bottom of the car causing no harm to anyone. How safe is a car battery under the back seat?
It is safe there, just keep it covered as designed with plastic so no metal touches the contacts. If there is ever a problem, you will know it instantly by the burning eyes and sulpher smell.
The original VW bug (as it was called) had the battery under the back seat and literally millions of them were produced. I never heard of it being a problem as far as safety goes.
It will be very safe and you have nothing to worry about because many vehicle have the battery under the seat like the mercedes and this has been around for 40 plus years..........
Your battery under the back seat will be fine. Don't be worried. Same as under the hood or in the trunk. :)

Has any one had a problem after charging a jumpstart battery in their car?

After I used tryed to charge my jump start battery in my car using a 12v plug, the car no longer charges my car battery.

    Did my alternator died out?

When I used the battery on another car it worked fine.

Is it bad for a car to charge a jump start battery while driving?Has any one had a problem after charging a jumpstart battery in their car?
I don't quite understand what you mean by starting your car with a 12 volt plug. Generally speaking battery chargers are rated by regulated amps not volts. If you jump started your car with another 12 V source such as another battery no damage should have have been done to your car's alternator.

The only thing you can do now is test your alternator with the car running with a volt meter across the battery terminals. It should read a minimum of 13.5-14.0 volts. If not, a new or rebuilt alternator is in order.Has any one had a problem after charging a jumpstart battery in their car?
The alternator must have died before you charged the battery or else you wouldn't have needed to charge it at all ?Has any one had a problem after charging a jumpstart battery in their car?
no way will charging 2 batteries damage your alternator

unless you connect it the wreong way round of course!
It's never a good idea to use the car's alternator to charge a dead battery. It puts the alternator into "full" capacity condition for a long period and that fries the electronics. They're not built for that kind of long term load. Next time use a battery charger instead.

How do you connect a subwoofer cable to the car battery??

Hi, I've never installed a sound system in a car and I have a powered sub but I don't know how to hook the big cable to the car battery's positive terminal. The end of the cord is a flat circle, looks kind of like a washer, and the connector for the battery is obviously not, its a cylindrical ring. Am I even asking the right question? They do connect right? They are different shapes, so how to they match up? Any other tips on routing the cable through the engine would also be appreciated, thanks everyone. How do you connect a subwoofer cable to the car battery??
if your battery is a top post, take the nut or bolt out of the clamp and put your eyelet in there, if it is a sidepost, unscrew it all the way, you may need to cut away some plastic right near where it hooks up to the battery, put the eyelet in there and screw it back in, sometimes the bolt isnt long enough (GM) you can get a bolt that is a little bit longer at your local stereo shop. How do you connect a subwoofer cable to the car battery??
You need to buy this thing that you hook up to your battery that will enable you to output power to your amp.

If its your first time hooking this up, I recommend you get someone who has done this before to help you.How do you connect a subwoofer cable to the car battery??
    Jeremy is correct.
you need to take the bolt on your battery terminal off stick the washer lookin thing on the bolt and tighten it down but make sure you have the amp kit grounded first oryou will blow your fuse and possibly your amp

Is it advisable idling my car ten seconds before driving to maintain the car battery?

1 car trip = 2 miles, and I drive the car three days a week. How about idling it after I finish driving? In other words, what can I do to maintain the car battery? My last car battery died out after seven months but I have never left the car lights on.Is it advisable idling my car ten seconds before driving to maintain the car battery?
2 miles is more than enough to charge it from the starting drain. And 10 seconds of idling adds nothing to that. You probably just had a bad battery. Is it advisable idling my car ten seconds before driving to maintain the car battery?
just driving 2 mi 3 x a week is gona kill that car fast,,not just battery,,,exaust system and everthing else [rings,,valves] drive it for 20/30 min one day a week...sunday driver???Is it advisable idling my car ten seconds before driving to maintain the car battery?
battery no they hold a good charge and charge kinda fast, but your engine wares( faster if it is driven cold, warm your car up before you go anywhere, there is something called a safe operation temperature and it is between 118F and210F when something is cold its is tighter,

  • When jumping a car to charge the battery, how long should we leave them on the cables?

We have a dead car battery and we know we alternator problem, we just want to charge the battery enough to get it to the garage. We live no more than 10 minuets from the garage. How long should we leave both vehicles on the jumper cables so the car's battery is fully charged? Will it hurt our other vehicle's battery by doing this?

Thank you for your help and time! When jumping a car to charge the battery, how long should we leave them on the cables?
Dalton is correct... the better the cables the quicker the battery will charge... the cheaper cables take longer because they are usually not the best gauge wire for the job. if your battery will hold a full charge and you use the correct cables then you should be ready to go within 10-15 minutes of charging. You of course should leave the car running that is charging the dead battery.
The alternator of the jumping car or any car for that matter is not designed for fully charging any battery.

Take the battery out and take it to the parts store and have a two hour charge put on it. They usually do it for free.

If you try to use a car to charge a dead battery the risk of damaging the alternator is very high.

If you know the alternator is bad, pick up a new one, and you'll have two hours to replace it while your battery is being charged.

If you're not sure if the alternator is bad, take the fully charged battery bad to the car, take the car to the parts store and ask them to check the battery, alternator/charging system. They usually do this for free also. When jumping a car to charge the battery, how long should we leave them on the cables?
About an hour if you have a good connection, it won't hurt the other vehicle because even the best jumper cables cannot draw enough amperage to hurt the charging system or battery of the other vehicle as long as they aren't hooked up backwards.

Edit: A few good answers here, and we are hoping you are right about the vehicle not charging and that you do not have daytime running lamps etc.

It probably would be less problematic to just have it towed.
You shouldn't charge a battery that way, it can cause damage to the other cars battery. Now, once the car is started, you shouldn't actually need battery power except to run accessories such as the radio so jump starting the dead car should be sufficient. When jumping a car to charge the battery, how long should we leave them on the cables?
It depends on how big your cables are. If they are really thick it will charge it faster. It won't hurt the other car if you put the cables on right

How do i know if my car battery is broken or the alternator?

Can i take the positive or negative off my battery while the car is running to find out?How do i know if my car battery is broken or the alternator?
start the car and take the red cable off (positive) if it dies it is the alternator if it doesnt it is the battery
Yes you can. Just take either off and if the car stops running, then your alt is bad.How do i know if my car battery is broken or the alternator?
if the car is starting the battery is not the problem. If you are having to jump it then yes take off the positive cable after you have it running if it stays running the alternator is good. with the cable still off shut the car down then take the cable and put it back on. If the battery is good and there is a short that is draining the battery there will be a spark when you reconnect the cable,. helps to be in a dark area when looking for the spark. The bigger the spark the bigger the short.
the first two answers are wrong

    do not unhook your battery

simply go to autozone (or buy a voltage checker that you plug into your cigarette lighter)

    or any place like that

and get your battery and alternator tested

if the voltmeter shows 14.4 volts when the car is running then the alternator is working

and if its shows 12.5 volts when the car is turned off then the battery is fully chargedHow do i know if my car battery is broken or the alternator?
As I read the first two answers one thing is clear. The engine may run but you've learned nothing about the voltage and amp output of the alternator. Too bad the el-cheapo car companies don't put volt meters on the dash. If the voltage isn't between 13.5 - 14.1 volts the alternator is sick. Amperage has to be checked with every electrical accessory on full blast.

The alternator voltage accessment by Alex is all wet too. Although an alternator may charge up to 14.5 volts for a few minutes but the voltage regulator had better trim that voltage back to no more than 14.1 volts or the acid and water will boil out of the battery if the voltage is left unchecked over a 6 month time period. That my friend is a fact.
If you have a Batteries Plus ( http://www.batteriesplus.com ) near where you live, you could also have it diagnose there for free.
not on a fuel injection vehicle. you can buy a battery at interstate batteries for 30 bucks, and have your alternator rebuilt for under 50 bucks.

How long should a car battery last for?

I have a 1994 Vauxhall Astra, and I've had the battery for a few years. How long do car batteries last forHow long should a car battery last for?
There is no standard life for a car battery. There are too many variables that affect a battery's life.

Temperature is a big one - cold temps reduce the voltage and make your car harder to start. High temps shorten the life of a battery.

Is your car well-tuned so that the engine cranks over and starts quickly, reducing the starter load on the battery? New spark plugs, wires, rotor and distributor cap, and a new fuel filter will help start the engine faster every time.

Do your alternator and voltage regulator work properly so the battery is being recharged, and so the alternator suupplies most of your car voltage requirements while driving? Do you drive a lot of short trips? -- that will reduce your alternator's recharing time.

Do you regularly check the battery acid level to make sure it's topped off with distilled water? (Assuming a standard, non-maintenance free type.) Do you keep the cable clamps tight and the battery's terminal posts clean of corrosion ? (About once a year, apply a paste of water and baking soda to neutralize any acid on the top of the battery, then wash with water.)

Inexpensive batteries might last only 2 or 3 years.

A high-quality battery could last 5-6 years, or more, if the battery and the car are well-maintained.
Most batteries are rated anywhere from 24 months to 60 months. It depends on the battery rating and meeting the services requirements of the battery, such as battery water ,cleaning the teriminals and making sure the alternate is working. How long should a car battery last for?
my last 1 was 5 years
If they are maintained correctly as per manufactures guidlines and your alternator is okay then there is no reason they can't last 10 years.

It depends if they are the correct battery for the vehicle, if they are abused, the type of driving you do and the temperatures you drive in.

They should last more than a couple of years. How long should a car battery last for?
    i would say on average 5 - 7 years
    3 years
my car was bought in 1999 and the battery finally went last week.
    5 Years
Usually guaranteed for 2 years. Now it depends how often you use it. Mine is nearly 7 years old and still going strong.
    3YEARS DEPENDING WHERE YOU LIVE
i worked for yuasa automotive known as LUCAS aswell in birmingham uk,they give 3 years guarantee so that mean it could last for 4_5 years.
2/3 years seems about average, some last longer and the make of the battery has very little to do with it.

How do you restore an old car battery so that it will take and hold a charge?

My dad was a great old time gear head . He knew all those neat tips and tricks to fix a car and save money. Sure wish he was still here to refresh my memory. He would take and old battery and put something in it and it would be like new. I cant remember if it eas an Alka-Seltzer or Aspirin tablet. It would foam then he would wash it out and add water to it.Charge it up and use it another year or so. Does anyone know of this trick? My memory is fuzzy on this. How do you restore an old car battery so that it will take and hold a charge?
remove all the battery acid in the old battery and get new electrolite solution and pour it in and recharge the battery, it will last a couple of months, not worth doing, just buy a new battery.
replacing the acid might help but is not the best solution! draining out the old acid must be done. the acid is better replaced with distilled water and epson salt mix (.5 qts of water to 8 oz of epson salts) heat water to 170 degree, mix in the epson salt and pour in. charge 24 hr and check

How do you restore an old car battery so that it will take and hold a charge?
In the old days we used to turn the battery over and flush out the old sediment that collects in the bottom of the battery, then we would suck up the acid with a battery bulb and recycle as much acid we could and then either top it off with water or add more acid depending upon the specific gravity of the mixture.

In the end the acid splashing on your cloths and eating holes in them, the mess and all it is not really worth it.
Fully charge the battery. Hook up a large power draw (such as headlights) %26amp; drain it completely. Recharge the the battery fully, repeat the procedure several times.

Is it bad for a car battery to be left out in the cold?

I bought a new battery for my car that I am fixing up, and have not used the battery yet, or even hooked it up. It is just sitting under the hood disconnected for the last month.. It has been pretty cold the past month, with 5 or 6 really cold days... Is this bad for the battery? Is it bad for a car battery to be left out in the cold?
So long as it's not connected to anything it can't go flat and the cold weather won't make a difference to it's performance.

    My Compliments
Probably there's no permanent damage, but your new battery might have lost charge by now and you'll have to charge it before you use it.Is it bad for a car battery to be left out in the cold?
I'm not sure if the cold would drain the battery somehow or not, but to play it safe, I would just hook it up to the car and start it up every once in a while, let it idle for a few mins.
The cold won't hurt the battery much, but if it is not fully charged, that can hurt it! If it is cold enough the acid is not "strong" enough and will freeze, this can warp the battery plates an make prematurre battery failure, possibly even braking plates in extreme situations and shorting out one or more cells! So at least keep it fully charged!

But if you really want to ruin a battery, set it on concrete floor for a couple weeks, -- this automatically makes trash out of most batteries quickly! If it has to sit on floor, put a couple 2X4s or somwething on floor and then set it on there! Is it bad for a car battery to be left out in the cold?
just use a battery charger on it every week. Since the car is not running it has no way to keep a 12 vt charge... Just dont take it out and sit on on the concrete ground as it will ruin it
i dont really think so ithink its fine
well my aunt puts her regular little batteries in the freezer...

i dont know if its the same but apparently the cold helps the battery last longer....

    well i hope that helped!
It shouldnt effect the battery too much. It might take a while to get it started or warmed up but it should be fne
Just make sure its not on concrete put something under it. The concrete will drain the battery.
    it can be
    Shouldn't be.

  • How do I charge my car battery?

My car has a dead battery. I jumped it yesterday but didn't drive it so it was dead this morning again. I borrowed a battery charger from my neighbor but I've never used one before. Do I leave my battery in the car and just put the clips on the terminals? Or do I have to take the battery out? Do I have to take the terminals off the posts first? My battery is ok because it jumped right away, I just left the key on accidentally (duh!!) Thanks for your help. How do I charge my car battery?
Red cable of the charger to the (+) positive post, black cable to the (-) negative post. leacve everything hooked up on the car as is. if the charger has varying rates of charge, pick 12 volts, medium charge, for about 4 hours or so.If the charging rates are listed in amps(2,10,20,)pick a middle one
There's more to this than just hooking up the machine.

You stated you just left the key on so it's probably not

in need of a new battery, unless you ended an old batteries

lifetime by a slow and deadly drain to it ( I doubt it ).

You need to have someone assist you because you really

have no clue what you are doing. Batteries can explode if

you create the wrong condition by hooking it up wrong with

the charger. You need to have the charger on the correct setting as well.

Remember one thing. Your battery was completely dead and chances are you may see some odd things happening with the dashboard lights and pre-programmed radio. If this

happens and it doesn't run right. Get a pro to look it over.

So far it's just a dead battery. Don't make a little thing a big

    thing...

Good Luck to you..... Remember ( Get someone who knows how to charge a dead battery) CORRECTLY....How do I charge my car battery?
Your battery might be a goner even if you can jump it. It happened to me before. It wouldn't start and I would jump it successfully and then drive around ok. But everytime I would go to start it, it was dead again. I had to get a new battery.

I would recommend getting your battery tested to make sure its ok. Just to make sure you won't get stranded somewhere.
if your charging it then just put the cables on as is dont take and thing off the terminals and leave the battery in the car and make sure the charger is on 12vHow do I charge my car battery?
If your battery is over 4 years old, you need a new battery and a battery charger won't help a lot if the battery is not holding a charge.

At what temperature would a car battery freeze?

My car wouldn't start this morning. I downloaded a guide on jumping cars off of the internet and it warned against jumping a frozen car battery saying that it could explode. My car is garage kept and it's about zero degrees out there now. It was -15 yesterday. Should I pay somebody to come jump the car and risk things or should I just do it myself? What temperature would a car battery freeze at?At what temperature would a car battery freeze?
if your battery is not working in the cold and its OK otherwise then its more a case of it not having enough cold cranking amps.

you will see on the batteries in the store cold crank amps stickers on the batteries you want the most you can get in a battery that will fit your car.

another thing you can do is buy a battery warmer its a blanket that wraps around the battery and you just plug it in then unplug and drive away the warmer stays around the battery. you may also want to plug in the block heater . both can be run off of timers if you want to save some money .

a jump start is fine just hook the cables up correctly and away you go its really the only thing you can do unless you have a battery charger .

i wonder how some other people on here think we all start our cars here in Canada with no boost . that's funny on cold days tow trucks do almost nothing but boost cars.
Take your caps off the battery and look inside to see if the water is frozen or not. The reason batteries explode is because gas accumalates inside the battery with the cap on. I have never heard of a battery exploding with the cap off. A little trick is to get a mechanics lamp, the ones with the cover. Turn it on and leave it under the car by the battery side. Heat rises and will help a little in keeping engine and battery warm. Also, there is danger in starting the car itself. Does your oil meet the requirements too. If the last oil change you put in 30 weight then you have a problem besides the battery. The oil will thicken as oil can freeze too. If it thickens when it gets too cold, then no oil goes to the motor and guess what happens next.

You did not really say what the temp in the garage was too. I would buy a cheap thermometer and place it near and about level with the car. Then you will be able to check the temperature more accurately. If a door goes to the house, leave the door open to heat the inside of the garage up. Then you can save the money and jump the battery yourself. Also if you get it running, then you might want to go to an automotive parts store where they can check your battery and alternator for FREE. Call around first. You might have a bad cell in the battery or bad alternator. At what temperature would a car battery freeze?
Mail box 10 is right!!!! You could remove the battery an put it in the house for several hours but you may have the same problem tomorrow.
the fliud can freeze if its a very old battery

the electrolytes in the battery break down changing into water

If you are uncomfortable jump starting a car.. call your towing company to do it for you

If its a battery past its warranty? go buy a new oneAt what temperature would a car battery freeze?
car batteries will not freeze if they are charging. If yours is frozen, check the condition of your charging system....

    good luck

PS... do NOT jump start or charge the battery. IT WILL EXPLODE!!!

    Replace the battery only
i own a repair shop, and a frozen battery will explode, you can take it out and take in where its warm, and it will thaw out,and most of the time when it thaws out it will regain its energy, and they will freeze up solid if they have a high water content to them instead of acid,i have one setting on the out side right now that's frozen real good but its a junk one,but they will actually freeze up,you may have to replace it ,sometimes the cold will destroy them, good luck i hope this help,s.
heat it up and drive to pts store for new one..

How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?

So I installed a brand new battery for my corolla '95. I did everything right and even cleaned the terminals so I am pretty sure that I did everything right when I installed it. My car started fine and everything but the thing is the symbol to change a new battery still shows up on my dash, so I don't understand whats wrong?

Could it be the wiring? Or does the dash need to be somehow reseted so it knows that I did put a new battery? How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?
The battery symbol is indicating that the alternator is not operating. This may be due to a voltage regulator or alternator failure. The system needs to be tested in the car to correctly diagnose the failure.
Wow - I can certainly see how'd you'd make that mistake.

The battery symbol has nothing to do with the condition of the battery. They've used that lamp on some cars for 50 years, but it has always meant the same thing. That symbol is intended to tell you that the charging system (the alternator) has stopped working. A new battery could never never never never never never solve that problem. Amazing, isn't it?

I suppose if the oil light comes on, you'd change the oil, right? If the brake light comes on, you'd get new brakes. It makes sense, but it won't work. That's just not what that means, pure and simple.

P.S. - the idea you could "reset" that lamp is very funny. It's completely a dumb circuit that has no intelligence. It would be like resetting your porch light. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?
That symbol does not mean " Change battery". It means there is a discharge condition...as in alternator is not recharging the battery. Have your charging system checked.
It may or may not be the battery.

We have a '95 vehicle as well, when you replace batteries and such a lot of the time you have to take it in to the shop to get it reset.

it seriously depends all on from what point to what point the flow is. if its from your right hand to left hand, big problem. if its from finger to thumb, its funny. In short, it takes VERY little power to stop your hart, so if the flow crosses your hart, then yes it will.

Can you get a electric shock from a car battery is the engine is off?
If you're worried about getting zapped, disconnect the battery. You can still get a jolt even if the ignition is off.
You can get a shock from a car battery if the key is off, but you should not have any problems if you are just changing a headlight. There is no power to the light or the plug if the light switch in the car is in the "off" position.
On a regular car (non hybrid) the battery is only 12 volts and at most 30-35 amps. This amount of voltage is pretty much harmless. You might feel a slight tingle from direct contact but you certainly would not get a severe shock unless you were messing with the ignition components which can have 30,000 volts in them when the car is running.

Most wires in a modern car are well insulated and the headlight connections are usually encased in a plastic socket so your exposure will be quite limited.

Hey I've heard a rumour that a light can be made using a car battery and car headlight.. Is there anyway u could do this with simple wiring??How to make a flashlight using a car battery and headlight?
Yes, but it sure wont be a pocket flashlight.

Just get a headlight and the pig tail for the light and hook it up. You'll have to figure out how to mount the light and battery together.
Wires from each terminal of the battery to the light contacts.

If you want a bit more safety, add a simple fuse to cope with any shorts, and add a switch to make it easier to use. If you do not use either of these use thin wire - this will melt if you short it, acting as a fuse - but it will get hot in use,

I could do this. I don't know if you could. Forgive my crassness, but if you get if wrong, a short circuit will release a tremendous amount of energy that is stored in that battery, which can cause burns or cause the battery to rupture and spray battery acid on you.

Please find something else to play with.
its not a rumor, it is simple fact. it will not have a nice case or be light weight but it will light your way like no other. all you need is a switch, three pieces of wire and the stuff that you mentioned before. How to make a flashlight using a car battery and headlight?
It can be done but not without some equipment--wire, clamps, and a socket for the bulb. You would have to experiemnt across the three terminals to get the best amount of light.
i would answer this , but it so simple to do.

that i think you are asking this question as joke.

    Am i correct ?

all you need is 2 wire from the batt to the head light.
I will definitely go with Frankie.

How can I tell when the car battery is almost dead?

I don't know much about car battery, but I believe that it recharges automatically when you run the engine. But if I wanna charge my phone or laptop when the engine is off, how can I tell when I should stop using the battery so that it has enough charge to start the car? Do I use some kind of voltmeter or something? If so how many volts/amps/watts does the car need to have left to be able to start? How can I tell when the car battery is almost dead?
When the engine almost starts is the closest answer. This is an unknown factor, i dont know how good the charging system, or the condition of the cables that carry the current because old damaged and corroded cables draw more current than new clean cables, and or the age and condition of the car battery either. Most cars today need at least 12.5 volts to start the engine. You are better off recharging the laptop in the house or with the engine running to be safe.

    good luck.....
Sluggish starting, dimming lights, malfunctioning/weak buzzers and such, etc. are all a sign of a weak battery. Everything requires at least 12 volts to even crank, though most batteries hold a bit more charge (12.5 - 13).How can I tell when the car battery is almost dead?
your engine will turn over slow or just go tick, tick, tick. if your going to charge your phone start it up once in awhile to keep the battery charged.
U CAN CHARGE UR PHONE 1 HOUR

BUT DON'T KEEP THE SWITCH ON

IF U SHOULD KEEP ON THE KEY

BETTER START AND KEEP FOR CHARGEHow can I tell when the car battery is almost dead?
When the car start is will take just alil bit longer then it would normally do..
battery wont charge unless engine is running
When the headlights are orange instead of bright white.. that's a good time to stop using up the battery.
at lease 12.5 and yes a volt meter is good to have.
