Car battery?

To what level are you supposed to fill a car battery without overfilling?Car battery?
It may take a flashlight to see properly, but if you look in each cell, there are two areas where it is open when looking down from the top with the cell cover(s) off.

The first level is more of a notch and this is where the fluid expands to as it heats up while charging for instance.

The second level is what your goal should be. This is the bottom of the opening "chute". Below that will be a roughtly 3/4 to 1 inch gap to the plates.

As another poster mentioned you need at least 1/4 inch coverage over the plates, but you should really be filling it to the bottom of that "chute" opening. That will allow for about another inch of expansion.

If you are on city water with chlorine and other chemicals added, it is recommended that you use distilled water. If you are on well water, chances are that will work fine from the tap.

If you can't find distilled water, most bottled water - even the stuff they just take out of the tap, does have the chlorine removed so that would be fine too. In addition one of those bottled waters that has a pull up top for runners etc. works well as a controlled method of adding water.

If you care to do a little reading about maintenance free vs maintainable, you could take a quick stop here:
