How do you restore an old car battery so that it will take and hold a charge?

My dad was a great old time gear head . He knew all those neat tips and tricks to fix a car and save money. Sure wish he was still here to refresh my memory. He would take and old battery and put something in it and it would be like new. I cant remember if it eas an Alka-Seltzer or Aspirin tablet. It would foam then he would wash it out and add water to it.Charge it up and use it another year or so. Does anyone know of this trick? My memory is fuzzy on this. How do you restore an old car battery so that it will take and hold a charge?
remove all the battery acid in the old battery and get new electrolite solution and pour it in and recharge the battery, it will last a couple of months, not worth doing, just buy a new battery.
replacing the acid might help but is not the best solution! draining out the old acid must be done. the acid is better replaced with distilled water and epson salt mix (.5 qts of water to 8 oz of epson salts) heat water to 170 degree, mix in the epson salt and pour in. charge 24 hr and check

In the old days we used to turn the battery over and flush out the old sediment that collects in the bottom of the battery, then we would suck up the acid with a battery bulb and recycle as much acid we could and then either top it off with water or add more acid depending upon the specific gravity of the mixture.

In the end the acid splashing on your cloths and eating holes in them, the mess and all it is not really worth it.
Fully charge the battery. Hook up a large power draw (such as headlights) %26amp; drain it completely. Recharge the the battery fully, repeat the procedure several times.

You need new acid for that to work.
