Yesterday as I was in a hurry to get into work, I left on the lights in my car. Of course, when I was off work, the battery was dead. I just bought a brand new, high quality car battery about 1-2 weeks ago because the old one was corroded and nasty. If I jump the car, by driving routinely is it possible for my alternator to charge my battery to its full capacity again? Or do I need to buy a new one? Surely not.
Thank you!Can a brand new car battery be charged fully by the alternator?
The new battery will be fine after you charge it by your alternator. To be sure, check the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) printed on the battery. Then go to AutoZone and ask them to check your cold cranking amps with a meter. They will do it for free. With the same meter they can check your alternator diodes to make sure you don't have a bad one. This will give you peace of mind that your electrical system is functioning at a high level.
New batteries have an 85% + charge. Drive the car and it will charge fully. Steady highway driving would be the best over local stop and go type driving. To help keep your accessories to a minimum. Can a brand new car battery be charged fully by the alternator?
if your battery cells were not damaged by the drain and jump, then yes the alternator will charge your battery back. the alternator produces 2 to 4 volts depending, well on your alternator and feeds that to the battery. the battery is 12 volts which is need to crank your vehicle. easy way to tell if it is fully charged is to take it to your local parts store and they will test it for free. it should read between 13.5 and 14.5 volts
wel could have just jump started it and might not have needed a new battery and yes alternator charges batteries and shoul dbe fine just sticking new one on but make sure you clean battery cables and tighten them up your really to go id just jump start it and drive it or maybe clean the cables you coul dhave the charging system check at any shop or parts store most wil be free to check it before you buy itCan a brand new car battery be charged fully by the alternator?
Yes it will recharge your battery and you will probably never have
to worry about it for some time. However, if you have a charger available or accessible, you should use that. Just don't overcharge it..
that would be even worse for the batteries future...
Good Luck to you.... Avoid using extra accessories for a day....
An alternator is not designed to fully charge a battery. The alternator is just for running your electrical accessories. To ensure you get the most life from your battery and alternator, you should fully charge the battery with a charger. Also, on the older 5.0L cars, a dead battery has been known to damage the starter solenoid too.
if the alternator is working good and the battery terminals are clean and tight then the alternator should charge the battery back up to full charge.
It will charge it.
The alternator generates all the power needed to fully charge the battery IF the alternator does not overheat and fail. A dead battery will draw a very high load and stress the alternator to its maximum output limits and so I suggest you don't run the headlights or other high amp accessories for at least the first 45-50 minutes of driving (charging). It will take (for example) a 70 amp alternator 0.85 hours (51 minutes) to fully charge a dead 60 amp hour range battery. I don't know what your battery amp hour rating is or what the output amp rating of your alternator is but I assume your battery and alternator are suitably mated and so 45 to 50 minutes of driving/charging will not overload the alternator output capabilities as long as you do not add more stress on the alternator by running the headlights or other high amp accessories during that time.
yes, what a stupid question. what other reason you think the alternator is there for. duh
