I drained my car battery because my alternator was going out. I did not know my alternator was bad, and i was running off my battery totally. Can I charge it or get a "jump" to get it up and running again or do I need a new one?|||You will need a new alternator. Your battery may be salvagable, depends on how many times that bad alternator drained it. Have it tested at Autozone or Sears.|||if your alt is bad you need to replace it make sure you get the old one tested before buying a new one just in case its still good and also get battery tested to it might end up being a bad cell|||You need to buy a charger at walmart to charge the battary. Do not try to jump the car by trying to get it fixed, you keep on jumping the battary, you will damage the Brain of your car. Car runs off a computer, so if you jump the car too many times, you will need to replace the computer in your car too...
Go to auto Zone or any parts house, and give them the year make and model of your car and replace the alternator.
Please remember before doing anything to the car take off both Positive and Negitive terminals to the Battary before working on it.|||Sure.........Get a jump start, or a battery recharge and you will be fine.|||If your alternator is dead and/or not working properly a jump start will not get you very far. Most likely it will die on you soon and you definitely will need another jump once you shut it off. if you get it totally recharged it will last longer, but that is still not the answer.
You should have the electrical charging system checked and replace the alternator/battery per the results of the test. Car batteries are not designed to be drained empty and then recharged. Doing this too often will damage the battery and severely decrease it's power.|||Discharging a battery then re charging it actually prolongs battery life. It will do the battery good. The above guy is wrong i'm afraid.|||you can get it jumped after you change the alternater then let it run for a while and the alternator will charge the battery.good luck|||The battery was not damaged. Don't do the jump start thing until you have replaced the alternator. If you take the car to a shop to get the alternator replaced, they will charge the battery. If you are going to change the alternator yourself, you should charge the battery on a charger rather than depending on the alternator to do the recharging. That way you will have a full charge. If you let the alternator do the charging, you might not get a full charge by the time that you need to turn off the car. Then you would need another jump start.
The only hard part might be getting the dash light system fixed. I mean the light that should gone on to warn you about the alternator. In some cars it is an alternator light, in some it is called "battery", in some it is the "Check Engine" light. It could even be a gauge rather than a light. Whatever it is, it didn't work. Finding the solution might be a puzzle or it might be easy, but it is necessary.|||If the alternator is bad, you'll definitely need a new one before you purchase a new battery. You may not need a new battery, so make sure to get it checked. Most chain auto parts stores will test/charge a battery for free. The reason you may need a new battery is that car batteries are not meant to be deep cycled. That is, they are not designed to be fully drained, then recharged. If this happens, it may severely shorten the life of the battery.|||you will have to charge it! but it will only last a little while|||just get it charged up again but i do not know why you did not know the alternator was not working as the ignition light comes on if it is not charging
