Difference between Car battery charger and battery tender?

I'd like to store my car this winter and was told I need to remove the battery and hook it into a Battery Tender. Wal-Mart has battery chargers that can charge a battery without the use of another car, Is this what I need? I have a good size battery for a v8 car, what size battery tender would I need for it?|||All a battery tender does is apply a small charge when necessary to keep the battery charged..... A battery charger can supply many more amps and is best for charging a battery that has ran down or has not been used in a while or if you need to get going soon....|||A battery tender is another way of saying trickle charger. NAPA has them for 6 or 12 volt batteries cost about 25 bucks and more reliable than anything wal mart may have.Unless the vehicle will be stored where it could freeze, you do not need to remove the battery. Just put a 2x4 or such under the hood so it does not get slammed down while trickle charger is connected. If you are storing in mild weather ie southern states, you can just park the car and not worry about. Extreme cold is the enemy as would be any electrical drains in the car such as alarms that are ALWAYS sucking juice. In the southern states at most all you should need to do is remove the negative battery cable. Be sure to do a thorough cleaning of the car and put a can of deodorizer in the car. check on it from time to time to keep critters out. when you can open the car up and refresh the air inside.

Put some fuel stabilizer in the tank and run car for a few minutes to keep the fuel system clean.

When youget ready to start the car again, spin the starter a few times before letting it fire up.|||Chargers charge batteries for short periods. (a day or two)

Tenders maintain batteries during long term storage. (several months)
