How do I charge a car battery outside the car with a portable car charger?

I'm not sure what to do with the negative wire. The instructions say to put it on a metal piece of the inside of the engine to ground it. But the instrutionsa also say that if the battery is not in the car to use a long wire and connect the negative to that wire? I'm confused.

Can't I just put the negative on the negative of the battery directly?|||Hook the "clips" to the appropriate terminal before turning the charger on. Then turn it on and let it charge.|||it seems that the charger have a indicator light will tell you the charge is full.you also can read some articles online which introduce the portable charger to learn about these.|||Be sure charger is unplugged from the mains

Attach red to positive + terminal

black to negative - terminal

plug the charger in to an electrical outlet|||They don't want a spark to occur at the battery; a charging battery can give off highly flammable hydrogen.|||neg to neg and pos to pos

dont charg it while its in the car, dont 4get to remove the battery covers and make sure its topped up with water dont overfill|||the solar charger is very convenient to use.|||Yes. All you have to do is make a circuit.
